Aurilnodes are essentially telephones that span through the inhabited Basement system. Aurilnodes tap into the Tree somehow to form and make connections. What switchboard they connect to is unknown, aside that it is automatic one.
The devices themselves are similar to early wall-mounted telephones. The receiver and transmitter are separate, presumably to easily suit different Basement species.
